This two-story Carpenter Gothic cottage has three prominent front gables and a simple porch with a balustraded terrace above. It was built southeast of Main Street in one of the earliest residential subdivisions in Denison. David and Ida Eisenhower, the third family to occupy the dwelling, rented the house near the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway yards when they temporarily moved to Denison after David found work with the railroad. Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower, the thirty-fourth president of the United States, was born here on October 14, 1890, the only one of his parents’ seven children to be born in Texas. The family returned to Kansas in 1892, and Eisenhower only returned to Texas in 1915 as an army second lieutenant stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. The City of Denison acquired the house in 1946, and in 1958 it became a state historic site. Period furnishings were installed in 2003.
