Garland House (The Brick House)

This T-shaped Federal house with two stories over a raised basement was built for David Shepherd Garland, a landowner, member of the state legislature, and later representative to the U.S. Congress, and his wife, Patrick Henry's niece Jane Henry Meredith of Winton (AH8). Built of brick laid in Flemish bond with pencilled joints, the facade has a centered three-bay pavilion with a pediment and a one-story porch, and is flanked by two bays on each side. The carefully detailed house has a wooden cornice with mutules, stuccoed jack arches over the windows, and punch-and-gouge decoration on the fanlight over the entrance and on the pediment's lunette. The elaborate Federal interiors are derived from William Pain's pattern book Pain's British Palladio (1786).
