One of eleven libraries donated to the citizens of rural Virginia by diplomat David K. E. Bruce of Staunton Hill (CT18), this is a charming and well-crafted one-and-a-half-story interpretation of the colonial buildings then being restored in Williamsburg. Five dormers on its slate, gable roof illuminate the upper floor. A pedimeted portico with slender columns shelters the central entrance. When built, the library bore the mark of its era. It had three rooms—one for white children, one for white adults, and one for African Americans, and African Americans entered by a separate entrance. The library moved away in 1986 and the building became the County Administrator's Office. Now empty, the building is being studied for a new county government use.
