Designs from Barber's office in Knoxville, Tennessee, spread across the United States by means of his many publications and mail-order plans. This house is typical in its irregular and exuberant massing and detailing. A porch spans the facade and wraps the polygonal corner tower, which is crowned by a ribbed and bulbous dome. The gable of the entrance portico is repeated on the second story. Built by lawyer, and later mayor, Carter as a wedding gift for his wife, Mary Drewery, the house has been adapted for use by the Rives S. Brown Real Estate Company.
