After Randolph-Macon College moved to Ashland in Hanover County and the Old Boydton Institute (MC12) took over its premises and chapel, the Methodist congregation that had worshipped at the college's church employed Jacob Holt to design a new church. The rectangular brick church has a pedimented front gable and is accented with a cupola crowned with a tall metal spire. Holt used Robert L. Dabney's arrangement of an in antis portico, executed here with slender fluted hexagonal columns and a large Italianate doorway. Holt employed inset panels in the brickwork, which is also reminiscent of Dabney's churches, and he mirrored their arrangement in the spacing of large wooden cornice brackets above shallow wall pilasters.
