St. James Episcopal Church

-A A +A
1842, 1870s, William A. Howard with James T. Whitice. 100 Jones St.

Erected by the builders of the courthouse (MC1), the church began as a sober brick box supporting a heavy Greek pediment. A large hexagonal cupola was part of the later building phase. The church was then modestly enlarged, enriched with mullioned windows, and the entrance was changed. The two original front doors were closed and a large central entrance was added along with a vestibule whose addition trimmed the length of the interior gallery. Interior doorways then led into the two-aisled interior.
