Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Patrick County Library)

This former library is one of eleven donated to rural Virginia by diplomat David K. E. Bruce. Centered on its Colonial Revival five-bay facade is a delicate entrance portico. The building's careful detailing includes Flemish bond brickwork, a modillion cornice, and a slate roof with clipped gables and hipped dormers. These features, which are seen on other libraries built from funding by Bruce, were influenced by the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. Herbert A. Claiborne's designs were serious and careful copies of classical elements in early eastern Virginia architecture. In 1991, the library moved to a new building (PT4).
