Built during a period of rapid growth in Janesville, these four cottages represent a rare early effort at tract housing development, albeit on a small scale. The owner of the rental cottages, grocer Charles Conrad, hoped to profit from the city’s burgeoning population of industrial workers. The nearly identical cream brick dwellings feature tall windows, framed by prominent brick label moldings, and window bays at the side elevations (two stories tall on two of the cottages). The hoods over the entrance stoops probably were added later.
