This hypothetical reconstruction of New Salem's original 1790s settlement, begun as a project of the Salem College Heritage Arts Program, has grown to become an important regional folklife educational center. More than a dozen one- and two-story log buildings from the surrounding region have been reconstructed and outfitted as a general store, print shop, tavern, meetinghouse, and cabins. During summer months, costumed interpreters use the fort in living history programs interpreting the lifestyle that pioneers once experienced in such surroundings.
