Downtown Berkeley Springs, immediately north of the state park, is concentrated along two blocks of Washington Street north of Fairfax Street. Commercial structures are mostly consistent in scale (generally two stories) and materials (brick). The brick Beaux-Arts-inspired courthouse is the most conspicuous building. Its narrow central tower contains the main entrance in its base and supports an octagonal stage with a clock and cupola above. The building, which cost only $17,908, tries to impart a sense of the majesty of the law, but its modest size and awkwardly arranged components, especially the tower, prevent it from succeeding.
