The county court authorized construction of this two-story brick building in 1808. Detailed specifications indicate that the rear was to have been apsidal, as was often the case in early Virginia courthouses. A frame cupola was added in 1820, but was later removed. As of 2002, the courthouse, an adjacent 1907 commercial structure with a pressed-metal facade, and a nearby frame house dating from 1845, are being restored as part of a museum complex.
