A year before he died, John Huddart designed this, the last of his many county courthouses. The two-story brick building is an Art Deco departure for Huddart, who, like Frank Edbrooke, in whose office he trained, generally used period revival styles. Terracotta trim and poly-chromatic brick brighten somewhat the rather stark facade with urn finials. Among those unimpressed with this newfangled design was the county sheriff, who specified local fieldstone and a much plainer style for the sheriff's office, which was added to the northeast corner in the 1930s.
