Town founder James McCandless moved his family to this Queen Anne Style house of brick with stone trim after succeeding in several commercial enterprises, including oil and Portland cement. The three-story house with semicircular entry and window bays and a second-story porch tucked under the eaves has been modified for use as a funeral home. McCandless, who became the town's key businessman and a state senator, originally built and occupied the log cabin (c. 1869) at 209 North Petroleum Avenue.
