Red brick walls 17 inches thick on a 3-foot-wide stone foundation, steel ceiling girders, and posts of Oregon pine help to explain the longevity of this ornate, two-story business block. Storefronts rise to paired, shallow-arched windows on the upper floor, beneath a bracketed cornice of the now stuccoed facade. With the hardware store, which is still in business, the building until 1925 also housed a bank, of which the teller window and vault remain. Another section of the building, old Firehouse No. 1, was resurrected in 1992 as a bed and breakfast inn.
