Story County Courthouse

1967–1968, Stenson and Warm. Courthouse Square

The first masonry courthouse was built during 1875–1877 and was designed by the Des Moines architect William Foster. This was a three-story building with mansard roof, in the French Second Empire style. In 1967–1968 the older building was replaced by an insistent modernist design by Stenson and Warm. The new building is wedge-shaped and is composed of two wings articulated by narrow vertical solid volumes, with windows between. The balance and symmetry of the design bring the modern ever so slightly into the classical tradition.
