Truman D. Allen, who had offices in Cleveland and in Minneapolis, was among several architects who designed a number of county courthouses in the Midwest. His design for the Dickinson County Courthouse appears more as a small-town school building than a courthouse. The stylistic references are mildly Richardsonian Romanesque. A square, three-story corner tower is the only really strong feature in the design of this brick and sandstone-detailed building. The first courthouse at Spirit Lake was a simple but handsome Greek Revival building of brick. This was designed by Harvey Abbott in 1859; it was not completed until 1868.
