DeLano Inn (David Doane and Hannah Davis House)

This large, cubical Italianate house was built by David Doane Davis (1814–1871) and his wife, Hannah. Davis came to Allegan in 1834–1835 from Hartford, Washington County, New York. Trained as a carpenter and joiner, Davis built many of Allegan's early buildings and invested his profits in real estate. The Allegan Journal for September 1877 described the Davis house as “one of the most elegant structures in our village.” The building has an octagonal cupola, prominent paired ornamental brackets, and a large wraparound porch. Davis also built a carriage house and surrounded the lot with a splendid ornate hand-puddled, cast-iron fence that was made by the A. Rossman and J. Hoxie foundry.
