The museum occupies the former Mobile and Ohio railroad depot. Landscape architect Cory Gallo planned the site’s gardens, which collect and manage rainwater. Hans Herrman’s green-roof steel pavilion is a repurposed gas station’s pump-canopy with an acrylic plank ceiling. Also repurposed is the pavilion’s steel spiral stair now clad in wooden scantlings. Admired for its appearance, but also for low maintenance and durability, the garden pavilion ensemble was included in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s 2016 exhibition By the People: Designing a Better America, which emphasized social responsibility in design.
