Bloomsburg University began as the Bloomsburg Literary Institute in 1856. The campus is dominated splendidly by the school's first building, Carver Hall (1867), an Italianate design by Samuel Sloan in consultation with school principal Henry Carver. The domed bell tower was added in 1900 in emulation of Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
