The original scheme for this building was conceived to reflect lessons from Frank Furness's recently restored library ( PH147.3) with clear articulation of different functions; later iterations added Gothic-style buttresses, a Virginia plantation house chimney, and a copper roof that undermined the original expressiveness. Nonetheless, with its immense round office tower above its base of classrooms, it provides evidence that Wharton has become the chief program of the university—as engineering was a century before.
