When it opened in 1920, the theater was part of the Select Pictures movie house chain that operated in Texas. The 475-seat theater burned in 1931, was rebuilt in 1935, and received a significant makeover in 1948, including an exterior modernization. The 1948 renovation created the cantilevered angled marquee, the porcelain metal and neon rocket ship tower that terminates in a small illuminated globe, and the recessed and angled box office window and entrance doors. The tower competes successfully with a steeple on the Baptist church located one block north. The Select is the oldest continuously operating theater in the state. In 1993, a group of actors purchased the theater and have brought in live musical and theatrical productions while still showing movies on the weekends.
