Mineola is a railroad town established in 1873 when the Texas and Pacific (T&P) Railway constructed its line through southern Wood County between Longview and Dallas. A junction was formed with the International and Great Northern (I&GN) Railroad at a small village called Sodom; the I&GN renamed it Mineola. The city became an important East Texas shipping point on the two rail lines. A T&P Railway maintenance shop was constructed during the 1940s. Timber, agriculture, oil, and gas sustained a strong local economy during various eras of the city’s history. Ima Hogg, doyenne of Texas arts and culture, was born in Mineola.
