Located five blocks north of downtown is this mid-twentieth-century residence by E. Davis Wilcox of Tyler, one of the foremost modernist architects in East Texas. The essential modernist components are all present: flat roof planes, exposed columns, projecting beams that establish a rigid structural order, panels of buff-colored brick, and wooden screen walls. The house’s entrance is on the side of the house and set within a porch toward the rear of the garage, thus deemphasizing traditional design principles and emphasizing the primacy of the automobile to post–World War II society. Oversized windows on the house’s west side are protected by extensive roof eaves.
