Residential Holden is characterized by large, rectangular double houses, two stories tall with gable roofs and one-story, shed-roofed front porches. Because level land was scarce, these houses were built close together and were occasionally interspersed with smaller houses. This arrangement allowed little space for additions; consequently original outlines and forms are more easily discernible here than in most company houses in coal country. Several of the houses have been re-sided over the years.
